Seminario de Astrofísica: “Gas in and around galaxies at early cosmic times: a multi-wavelength view”

“Gas in and around galaxies at early cosmic times: a multi-wavelength view”.

La presentación se realizará en la Sala 208 del Instituto de Física (IFIS), 2° piso, Edificio de Ciencias, Campus Curauma, PUCV.

Revisa el abstract de la presentación:

Early galaxies are shaped by complex feedback and accretion processes occurring across a wide range of spatial and timescales. Recent advances with JWST and ALMA have changed our understanding of high-redshift galaxies and led to some of the most intriguing discoveries of the past decade. One such discovery is the presence of extended [CII] halos around high-redshift galaxies, reaching up to 10 kpc and about 2-3 times more extended than the stellar light. While these [CII] halos are found to be common at z>4, their formation mechanisms are still not well understood.

Using ALMA and JWST observations of gas and dust in a sample of star-forming galaxies at z~4−6, we explore the role of radiative shocks in shaping gas properties of these galaxies and, in particular, their potential contribution to driving [CII] halos. By combining rest-frame optical emission line ratios with gas velocity dispersion measurements, we derive a conservative lower limit of 1% for the incidence rate of shocks in main-sequence galaxies at z=4-6. We also find that half of our galaxies show outflows, which are likely driven by AGN activity or star formation rather than by mergers or large-scale tidal interactions.

Finally, I will present results from a student project on Ly-alpha emitters as probes of the intergalactic medium using MUSE, and I will briefly discuss some of our upcoming observational programs.

Extendemos la invitación a la comunidad PUCV y al público interesado.
