This Workshop is a regular meeting takinghome2 place in Viña del Mar, Chile, since December 1985. Its current director and founder is Professor Enrique Tirapegui of the Universidad de Chile. The aim of the Workshop is to create a stimulating environment for experts from the region and the rest of the world to present their results and discuss those with the nonlinear community. Since, its beginnings, a key goal of the Workshop has been to promote the participation and cross-discipline interaction of young scientists together with more established experts from a wide variety of the Nonlinear fields

This Session has a very special character since it appears on the occasion of Enrique Tirapegui 80th birthday; Bachelor’s in physics from the University of Chile (1962). Ph.D. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics at the University of Paris. He was incorporated as a number member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, Institute of Chile, in 1984. He is a full professor of the Physics Department of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile. In 1991 he was awarded by Chilean national prize distinction for his contributions regarding the effects of random perturbations experienced by macroscopic systems and the formation of spatiotemporal structures in these systems when they are far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Besides, for his work training new scientist in Chile in nonlinear science. To his credit, he has published more than 120 publications in journals with an editorial committee and trained more than twenty scientists, generating the non-linear school in Chile.

The Workshop has played a significant role in the development of Physics in Chile and the region, especially in the area of Nonlinear Physics and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics.   The Proceedings of the first nine sessions have been published regularly with Kluwer Academic Publishers (Holland) in the Series on Nonlinear Phenomena and Complex Systems of the Centro de Física No Lineal y Sistemas Complejos de Santiago (CFNL). The Proceedings of the 11th session appeared in a select number of the International Journal of Bifurcations and Chaos, and the Proceedings of 12th session were published in a special issue of the European Journal of Physics D.  The Proceedings of the 16th session have been published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
